Pissed . . . or Something
keep what you have and be happy. It is an awesome bike. Use the extra $3000.00 you would lose for the shiney stuff on your new bike. The difference between the 96 and 88 is minimal without headwork. The six speed is just one more time you have to shift!!! LOL Harley is just protecting their dealerships from having a glut of 06 that they cant move. I love my 06 and 5 years down the road we will all be buying 110's anyway, with the new 8 speed tranny !! So BE HAPPY !!!
I realize that your post is more "thinking out loud" than a question; more of a way to help you get your thoughts organized. So here goes:
There will always be a NBT (next big thing), and the grass will always be just a little greener on the other side of the fence. I don't know if the 07's are the NBT or not; the 96 is really just a stroked 88, and from a purely mechanical point of view, the TC 88 doesn't need 6 speeds; it really doesn't even need five. And what about the 08's? Some are saying that the REALLY big changes will be revealed in 2008. So there is yet another opportunity to build some regrets.
It sounds like you really liked the looks of the Streetglide (just about everyone did), so you bought one. But it also sounds like you're building a Streetglide Ultra Classic. So I'm wondering if you had complete clarity of purpose even before you got the Streetglide.
My advice would simply be this: light somewhere, and give yourself some time for reflection. Get a little breathing space. If you really, really liked the SG when you got it, then a stroked engine and an extra gear aren't very good reasons to trade it. Plus the bugs in the newer model; there are always bugs. If it turns out that the SG was what you wanted when you got it, then you made the best decision you could have made at the time you made it; so just get comfortable with it. If you keep second-guessing yourself (and the MOCO), you may find it difficult to ever get comfortable.
Just my free advice.

It depends on howmuch money you have in your bike. I would rather put 5K in my bike to get a built 95 and a baker 6 speed tranny. It's up to you. I know that I don't want to be a test rat again. I did it with the 06 SG.
I have an 06 street glide. I often think about the bigger motor or a 6 speed. I go out and ride my bike and say to myself there is no reason to need anything else. The bike you have is just fine. What the guy said above is very good, in 08 and beyond there will be even bigger changes. My 06 is a great bike and does everything I need. I love it and will stick with it for a long time.

Besides, they make plenty of 'em. It's not like their going to explode and disappear as soon as they are sold. So if you really want a 96" and 6 speed in the future H-D will be selling them for some time to come and the used market will have plenty...look at all those folks (me included) who HAD to have a 100 yr bike. There's still plenty to be had out there if you still want one.
PoleCat, I've got some potentially good news. When you're at your dealer, go grab an '07 parts catalog. Look at the dyno information at the front of the Screamin' Eagle Section.
I bet your '06 will look at better to you.

Depends on your use. Most of the time my enjoyment is the 'back roads'...I do enough freeways during my work week. When I do take the MC on the freeway, I don't use 5th until after 60 mph....and that works for me. Now if, I was into a lot of touring, perhaps the 6th gear would be my cup of tea. As far as HP....I ain't racing anybody...ok maybe once in awhile, but the 95 CI upgrade is relatively inexpensive, and if I have to have it so be it. If I were to buy a 2007, then next year would have to be the 2008, then 2009 (103 CI)....2009, 12 speed. I like my personalized RKC, my chrome, my upgrades...me. Will I change model years...maybe someday, but not now.
I went to the dealer where I bought my '03 Ultra Classic to get a new muffler clamp. The one on the right side was loose and would not tighten.
I asked my salesman how much my '03 Ultra Classic would be worth on a trade for an '07 Ultra Classic. I was surprised to hear him say that I would only loose about $100.00 from what I paid for it.

Put the $3k into the engine and pipes on the 06'. After upgrading to the 95ci/203 cams and Rinehart pipes, I never look for a sixth gear. She wants to keep on going in 5th well beyond 100mph. Shoot, she just gets to her sweet spot at about 85mph !
