I've been stewing on this all day long . . . I guess I kind of feel a little cheated, or stuck or something.
I really wanted the six speed transmission . . . but I also felt like I had to have the street glide. So the compromise was to do without the six speed and go with the bigger need.
Now I hear that if I had waited a few weeks, I could have had it all. With the 96 to boot!
I don't want to say I'm pissed . . . but I'm very not happy.
I know it's tradition to hide the new year model's specs. but this would have been a deal breaker for sure.
I received a call from the stealership yesterday that my cruise control and passing lights are in. I have an appointment to have them installed next week.
If I were to order an 07, I could have these parts installed on it . . . I hate to throw away the extra $$$, but I do have a bit of equity in this one (I put about half down), so I might do okay on the new deal.
Am I nuts tho? I mean, I get close to 55MPG and I love the ride and feel of my 06. I have reached for that missing 6th gear about a hundred times already . . . and now that I know there's one available, it'll haunt me forever.
I would not do what you are wanting but that is Me - Life is Way to short to be in your situation.. it really is only money,,, do it and enjoy it... You will be way more happy with "what you want" as long as the kids are fed - then go for it...
Gotta agree with the others! If I could actually afford it right now I would trade my 06 up to the 07 , but.........NO CAN DO. SO, ENJOY WHAT YA GOT WHILE YOU CAN. Good luck on the frustrations.
TOOLBOX
There are always (one hopes) going to be improvements and I grant you the 07's are huge. I was going to do engine work on my RG and on my Sportster. I figured (right or wrong--maybe I will never know) that the RG build would probably be better than the 07 (???) and I did not really care about the 6 speed (as I have enough to do with only 5). So I went through with my plan and ordered the parts.
As for the Sportster-It is more and more becoming my second choice after the RG. So I feel that I will not put any more money into the Sportster and someday, maybe, go for a Dyna, which is really a beefed up Sportster (in my mind anyway) which is a big jump from a 1200 to a 1550 plus. Who knows? You throw the dice, sometime you wins, sometime you crap out.
The 96 ci engine is NOT a big deal......power is almost identical to the stock 88. The 6-speed is sweet. As for the shifting into the imaginary 6th gear on our 5 speeds, we ALL do it. Whatever trips your trigger, but think about waiting a year.........your trade-in value will be very close to the same as it is now......or wait a few months. They'll have more coming! And the fever will be cooled a bit by then...........we all get NBF (New Bike Fever) this time of year.
i wanted a 6 sp also...so i got one...when all my 98" stuff comes in and the bike is down...i'll install it...i dont have the proper pullers and tools for the tranny but i'm thinkin it wont be too bad...if it kicks my butt, i'll call in the troops...it'll cost ya 2k or less, use the case in the bike and go for it
Polecat, My grandfather (who likes the latest and greatest stuff) always tells me that he always had the fever for the new HOT stuff but several times wished he would have bought the second years model....cause more bugs were worked out. He said bragging rights override the best decision.
