Default Primary Tensioner Failure

I just got back home luckily. I have an 05 EC Ultra and I believe the primary chain tensioner failed. My first question is this a common problem and does anyone make an upgrade for this. My ride only has 17,500 miles which seems like a premature failure to me. The good news is no leaks so I think the damage will be minimal. I read a couple of the threads here and did not find a lot of discussion on this subject. I would appreciate guidance from anyone that has had to address this issue. Should I replace anything else that may have lead to the failure while the bike is down?

I have only seen a handfull fail on various models in over 30 years. If you in fact do want a upgraded style I would recomend checking out PJ's online and have them send you a catalog which is about 400 pages of good stuff for bikes!
Have you removed the primary yet to inspect,be sure.

HD has an auto adjuster replacement for about $110. This is the one I used on my '05 Ultra. Some of the guys have another brand that they use too. I'm sure dawg will fill you in with the details.

I haven't pulled the primary cover yet. It is cooling down. I will probably go out first thing in the morning and pull the cover.

Did your tensioner fail or did you fail to keep it adjusted?

17.5k miles sure does seem premature. Mine has 77k on it and still looks good.......Anyway, I'd just spend 6 bucks and put a stock one back in. IMO, a self-adjusting tensioner is an unnecessary luxury. I can of better ways to spend 100 bucks.
