Replace the Battery with a non-HD one?

You are correct but that is the battery on their web site that fits my 01 FLHR. While I want a good price I am too poor to buy cheap stuff and you USUALLY get what you pay for.

A friend of mine has a high compression built 95" Road King with no compression releases. He melted the posts off 3 brand new interstate batteries and finally spent the extra dough on the dry cell odyssey and problem solved. It spins that 95" motor with ease.

Looks like they could be the same. Walmart car batteries are Everstarts, probably made by several different companies, and their premium batteries are about as good as anybody else's. A three year free replacement (on the car batts anyway) is about as good of warranty as is out there. I don't know who makes the MC batteries, looks like DEKA
one thing about a walmart battery, plenty of places to get it warrantied.

Kodiak/Odyssey Batteries
If you are looking for the best battery money can buy...buy a kodiak. Without getting too long winded, I'll explain a bit. In my old life (before retirement in 2005), I was an Army Maintenance Warrant Officer. Many army weapons systems are VERY demanding of battery power. And no battery performs better (to include cold cranking amps, reserve power, and storage life) than what's known as an electrolyte starved cell battery. These batteries are used in the hawker missile system, and I'm also told (don't know 1st hand) for starting fighter jets. It has a 10 year (NOT pro-rated) warranty. They list a battery on the web site for Harley as well. If you buy from the web site you'll deal with a guy named Yawan. Tell him chief Glass sent ya.

I tried to keep from rambling too much & probably missed a few things:
1.) Odyssey and Kodiak are in fact the same battery.
2.) This battery type is often called dry cell (also called "electrolyte starved cell"). It's performance is superior to Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), or any other type of automotive battery on the market today (although there are some fantastic things going on with lithium technology).
3.) The problem experienced by all electrolyte / lead plate type batteries (including wet cell, AGM, gel cell, and dry cell) is the accumulation of sulfide build up. As sulfides accumulate (a natural process of the charge/discharge cycles) they make contact between plates and short them out. By changing plate design, and electrolyte characteristics, the sulfide accumulation can be reduced, or relocated to increase battery life. The best of these approaches (at least in my opinion) is the dry cell (Kodiak, or odyssey) technology.
4.) I have had professional dealings with Yawan Smith (The guy at Kodiak), and he sells what I believe to be some GREAT products (No I don't get anything for saying that). The air compressor at the kodiak site, the ready welder, and the pul-pal are all even better products in person...than they appear to be on the web site. l recommended all of them to the army. The site also lists the premier power welder. It also is pretty fantastic, but I feel the zena (a different vendor) is a better welder http://www.zena.net/
Well I went on a ramble again. I hope I didn't sound like a "know it all"...because I sure ain't. Getting the army to change doctrine, or equipment is a long, and difficult process. Some battles you win...some you lose, but after you have a lot of "game in the fight", it's easy to get up on a soapbox when someone speaks about it.

Conventional lead acid batteries do more harm than good and should be discontinued from production. Corrosion causing, leaking, paint eating, metal deteriorating. 1910 technology needs to go. The $50 you save will probably cost you

If you have a high comp build you need to go to haevy duty leads from yoopers or sumax, the other question at hand is hd battery or something else, I have a freind that has a 02 fatboy that the orginal battery just went bad, not bad for 8 yrs, I bought a drag battery and the post sux, they crush if you tighten them up to much, mine did, also had a hard time keeping the lead tight even with red lock tight on it, so I just put a new HD back in.

Well, my search has ended. The only non-HD dealership battery I could find in the area that for my bike was at NAPA but cost $215.
So I ordered the same battery that Apex Battery has for $129 from Wholesale Batteries Direct for 116.95.
Now I have to wait a few days before getting the bike out again.
