I see a lot of folks here are running a SE Stage 1 or K&N air cleaner with the "football" cover removed, and have installed an air cleaner insert to cover just the end of the air cleaner. I did a search on the forum here, and noticed that some of the air cleaner inserts actually appear to be derby covers with the five holes around the outer edge.
Am I mistaken, or can any derby cover be used as an air cleaner insert for the open air cleaner look? If true, will I have to buy one of the air cleaner trim kits that use a supplied attachment bracket and then also buy the derby cover that I like? Is making any sense at all?????
The cover you are seeing uses a star bracket underneath it to mount it to the air cleaner. The skull one I have on my bike uses the star bracket......that bracket mounts to the air cleaner with the 1 large stock screw in the middle. Then you use 5 small chrome screws to mount the skull cover to the star bracket.
Here's a pic of a air cleaner insert being used as you describe. It is the HD flame one made out plastic, cost about $25.00.
It is mounted on an original K&N that came with the HD Hi-Flow kit back in 1999 or so.
Cool. So I can also use any of the inserts with the single screw hole in the center. I suppose now I need to decide which style to go with. Thanks again to all who responded.

You can even use the ones with the 5 holes... The come with a star bracket that goes between the air filter and the cover...
I had 2 custom made at Extreme Custom Engraving , both use a single bolt. If you come up with a design he can accomodate. I run the SE air cleaner.
Work great except for a little sputter in heavy rain . www.azece.com Cap is a great guy to work with
I know this is an old post but I did a search and this seems like the perfect thread to post to....
I bought the skull cover for my low rider, and I am not sure how to pop out the stock one?
It appears it's NOT necessary to have the open look and keep the stock football cover, and put the insert in the middle, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

Any help is appreciated.
If you bought the skull insert trim then it should have come with a star shaped thing-ie-mabob that you take out the center bolt of the football cover and bolt the star over it. You then screw the skull cover with the five provided screws to the five holes in the star thingie. Unless you bought one with one screw hole in the middle.
