I see a lot of folks here are running a SE Stage 1 or K&N air cleaner with the "football" cover removed, and have installed an air cleaner insert to cover just the end of the air cleaner. I did a search on the forum here, and noticed that some of the air cleaner inserts actually appear to be derby covers with the five holes around the outer edge.
Am I mistaken, or can any derby cover be used as an air cleaner insert for the open air cleaner look? If true, will I have to buy one of the air cleaner trim kits that use a supplied attachment bracket and then also buy the derby cover that I like? Is making any sense at all?????
I used the flamed air cleaner insert on a Ness Big Sucker. Looked good, but had to watch for signs of rain so I could put the Cleaner cover back on. Too much water caused havoc, were light rain didn't bother much.
I used the peace officer commemorative collection air cleaner trim. It comes with a star-like backing that has a hole in the center where the original air cleaner bolt goes, then you have the five screw holes on the outside. The only thing I had to do was put a washer in behind the star and air cleaner as the small screws did not reach all the way in otherwise. You can see it in the sig pic below
dawg - I saw yours in another thread, and really like the look. That's when I did my search here.
Anyway, the reason I was mistaken about the derby cover is from THIS description at the Harley web site. In the description they clearly state "derby cover" even though it's listed under aircleaner inserts.
Do the air cleaner inserts with the single screw hole in the center also work as an open cover? I'm mainly concerned about the diameter of the insert, and I suppose since they are all the same size that any insert will work with my SE air cleaner.
want one? I took mine off, went back to stock, but am looking for a 25001-03 100th anniversary one.
you can have it for 50 bucks plus shipping
Damn, the wife just paid $119 at the local stealership for mine yesterday. Wish this topic came around prior to that. I just installed it (after changing my primary fluid and stripping the drain plug...you can read that in my other post[&:]) Still got to get the timing cover, but the wife is going to make me wait a bit...too much lovin for the bike and not enough for her[]
