I bought a light tint 10" Fast Aire, and it's perfect, I look over about 2.5 " and if it's bad just hunker down a little.

FastAire has really inexpensive sheilds----$30 or so---so try a couple then spring for the more expensive ones.

Ideally, the top of the shield should be at the same height as the tip of your nose, when sitting COMFORTABLY. When you sit up straight, it should be even lower. I'm 6'1" and the top of the 12" stock shield is directly in my line of sight (when sitting COMFORTABLY). NOT GOOD. Looking to change soon, probably Klock Werks, and definitely SHORTER!

Ride safe.

Excellent info! Thanks for the measuring "rule of thumb" Glenn, that helps. Those Fast Aire shields look to be a perfect way to check and see without breaking the bank. Looks like an 8" will be perfect for summer/spring/fall and a 10" for winter will get me back to stock height I had on my detach windshield.

Thanks again fellas, great info!

Great point on the COMFORTABLY part. A lot of folks sit on a bike for 30 seconds and based on that, end up with a shield about an inch too tall. They forget once you've ridden even 20 minutes you'll be slouched a little, the seat's compressed, etc. and obviously your feet aren't on the ground.

Default windshield

I just got a 10" from Long Range Shields, it throws the air up and over my head. They claim that with the 10" no bugs. I am 6'3" and the stock shield from Harley was driving me crazy. I love this new one. With the recurve I have less wind than with the stock and I really like the look. LRS, harleyshields.com has a new shield that will also divert air around you, looks interesting. Good luck.

Everybody has their own preference on windshield height and you have yours. You can always cut a too tall shield until it's perfect for you. No muss or fuss with measuring this and that. Just tape both sides of the windshield to prevent scratching, draw your line of reference and cut it with a saber-saw using a fine tooth blade. Then carefully file it smooth and sand it with fine sand paper and you'll have a factory looking shield. If it's still too tall repeat the process. I've done this on several bikes and this method not only saves money but works to perfection every time.

+1

after sanding (while it's still taped) acetone can be used to finish the edge, rather tricky but fun. Or, after it's untaped you can use a propane torch to flame finish the edge. I usually just use a small DA progerssively from 220 to 400 grit and then the acetone before I untape it.

I'm 5' 10" and have a Clearview 8" with recurve. I like to look way over my shield and sometimes get a small amount of buffeting at the top of my helmet and get smacked with the odd critter. I have a 9 1/2" cut down stock shield that I can still see over and if the bug thing starts to bother me, I may someday buy a Clearview 9 1/2".
