Default cop bike chameleon

curious...i have a 2009 flhtp...besides the obvious (passenger seat/tour pak) what do i need, in order to change from solo rider to: solo with tour pak (directly behind solo seat), two-up with/without tour pak? the majority of the time will be spent solo...local and long distance. periodically, the need to ride two-up, with and/or without the tour pak will be necessary. will i be able to retain the existing police box platform, with the solo seat air tank location, in performing these feats? or, will this require to wrap my head in duct tape, in fear of exploding? confused.

I think your best bet will be a quick-detach solo T-Pak mount, and switching to a sissy bar for two-up. I don't know of any way to move the Tour-Pak from solo-mount to two-up mount in a routine quick-switch kind of way.

Obviously to do this you'll need to relocate the air reservoir for the seat. I had a cop seat on my Street Glide and ran the reservoir into the left saddlebag. Just required a very small hole drilled in the inboard side of the saddlebag for the air line, then velcroed the reservoir to the interior. Worked like a champ.

Keep in mind that you can't use the regular H-D Tour-Paks if you have the stock Cop saddlebags. The lids don't clear the Tour-Pak. There are some aftermarket Tour-Paks made specifically for cop bikes; I think E-Glide Goodies sells them.

You can use a regular tour pack but you'll have to fabricate some 1/2" tall spacers or bushings to raise the tour pack so that the saddle bag lids will clear. Harleypingman helped me out with some rubber bushings that he was no longer using. If you decide to go that way PM me and I'll send you more info.

What he said, I posted the same info and then read the next line and found I was repeating what was already known. Just call me a post ***** for now and I will redeem myself later in life.

The tour pak quick detach kit works for me and my police saddlebags but I have the more narrow smooth tour pak which allows the bag lids to open..but it is close.

thanks to all for your responses. i appreciate the sage advice of all that have made these modifications in the past. if i relocate the air tank...will the quick connect bracket fit on the existing "U" bracket? do i need the "docking" hardware? will this allow the "trunk" to be located on top of the fender for solo riding, and moved "aft" for two-up? this is where i am becoming confused....

I believe if you relocate the air tank you will be able to install docking hardware. There are two types of docking hardware: 1-up and 2-up. If you want to be able to move the tour pack two locations you will need two types of the "quick detach" docking hardware. Also note you will have to purchase and install the quick detach harware for the tour pak that mates with the bike's harware. The forward solo riding detach docking tour pak hardware is the same one that can be used also with the detachable backrest for 2-up riding. If you want the diversity for the "chameleon bike" get both docking positions hardware, a backrest and tour pak and you are set.
I did this same process on mine except the seat air tank was already removed. I have both positions, a solo seat and two up seat and ended up keeping it in the tourpak 2-up position 95% of the time.
I hope you are sufficiently confused, it took me a while to get the bike set up.

Weelbur2, congrats on the '09 FLHTP. Couple of points to keep in mind when reviewing what others have done. First, your bike is an '09 so it uses different mounting hardware and a different detachable rack (solo or two-up) than '08 and older police models. Here is the HD website information on the two-up detachable tour pak rack:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US

As you can see, different racks are offered for '09 bikes and '08 and older models.

Second, I haven't spent hardly any time looking at '09 and newer police models so a picture of what you have on the back of the bike would be helpful. If it's like the '08 and older bikes, it will have a radio rack on the back with the air tank bolted to it and mounted on the bottom of the black rack. The chrome bracket that supports that stuff is the same as the bracket used to permantently mount tour paks on Classics and Ultras. That will have to be removed to use HD's detachable solo or two-up tour pak racks. Once it's removed, you can use the same mounting hardware and two-up detachable rack that are used on other Touring models.

The air ride seat may present issues if you want to use a solo detachable tour pak rack. If you use a civilian seat and don't have the permanent tour pak bracket on the bike, you can (probably) use the same mounting hardware and solo rack used on civilian bikes.

Suggestions: (1) Spend some time reviewing the HD parts books for 2009 civilian models and the supplement for the police models so you can see what, if anything, is different about your police model regarding the installation of detachable hardware and tour pak racks/backrests/etc., (2) pay close attention to replies from owners of '09 and '10 police models as it relates to installing detachable accessories; and, (3) pay close attention to posts regarding relocating the air tank regardless of model year since that system is (probably) the same regardless of the model year of the bike.

Good luck with your research.

I have an 09 FLHP and have done what you are wanting to do. I did remove the air canister and placed it behind the engine cover on the right side. On my bike, there is a small shelf which is to be used for something when a side car is used, and the air canister fits very nicely in that space. I did have to cut off the "L" shaped support bracket on the canister. Also, I did remove the radio platform. Unfortunately, when you do this, you will also loose the license plate hardware. I bought a new license plate bracked from HD and mounted it above the taillight. In order to secure either the 4 point or 2 point docking hardware, you will need to replace or elininate the chrome cover which fits over the top frame. HD wanted $79.00 for each side, so I just took off the stock and did not replace it. I did have to make spacers for one bolt on my 2 point docking hardware. Also, what you have been told about the spacers under the tour-pak with the police saddle bags is correct. I know this is a lot of work, but you will be very pleased with the results. Also, when I bought my bike new, there was a bracket with blue lights which go on the license plate bracket. Because we cannot run blue lights, I went to O'Rileys Auto and they have either red or amber replacements for the blue. They change out by simply twisting. The wire to connect these lights is in front of the battery. Adds two extra red lights on the back of the bike. Halfbreed

thanks mucho! amabeetle: sufficiently confused, thank you. ping: once again, priceless info, tip-o-the-hat! halfbreed: excellent! would you by chance happen to have any pictures that you could share? i'll look on the right-side for the air tank relocate.

I really do appreciate members, such as yourselves, who take the time to inform those of us looking for legitimate help. that is how i envision a "forum" to be, not some of the "drivel" i have seen on these pages in the last two weeks....trying to follow some of those threads, makes me reach for the duct tape, so that i can wrap my head before it explodes!

hopefully, i can return the favor sometime in the future.

adios,

will

Note: Scootworks makes two different size boxes: CruzPac & SuperTrunk III. Squadfitters makes a standard box without lights...neither as pricey as the HD
