A good powder coater will sandblast the items before he starts anything. If any of the chrome is flaking off then it will break the powdercoat off sooner that if the chrome is in good condition

There is a member and sponsor of HDF who does powder coating. Asking him or your local powder coater would be best I think...

we chemical strip then blast them all. some harley chrome just sucks to be honest and peels and flakes, on stuff that is really bad we will rough sand, blast, prime, then coat. some times even cross linking two coats to get it smooth as glass. depends on the parts, ultra dashes and gas covers are the worste for chipping and flaking chrome

My local PC'er told me that if the chrome is in good shape they will just clean it and PC over it. Does this seem right? Should the parts be roughed up or media blasted before PC'ing or not. I just want to make sure the finish holds up. I've got several parts in a box that are ready to go, but I want to make sure that the work is done right.

Yep, this is why you have to interview your coater before you drop off parts. The local guy I used walked me through the process. The first two I looked at said that they just coated over the chrome. Uh-uh.

i have my own powder coating gun and i havent had a problem going right over the chrome piece no scuffing or sand blasting or stripping ! but then again the chrome is in about perfect condition when i do this , no problems yet . i clean the parts with paint thinner first then shoot away ! dont know if this the way the pros do it but for me as an amatuer no problems !
