Today I completed my 20th year of law enforcement. I am officially able to retire as of right now!

Now, I have a friend that is on The Redondo Beach P.D. and he also has 20 something years. He is not going to retire because he is only 48 years old. He is going to work longer because his age. Something to with how much money he will recieve is linked to his age? He explained it to me, but I didn't really grasp it.
I have 20 and can retire at half pay. No additional benefits to staying longer. I am only 41 right now, and have two young children, both less than 10. I can't go anywhere yet, but am looking for a way out...
