Congrats on your 20. Here in California you are vested after 5 years and are eligible to retire at 50 under the California Public Employment Retirement System... The city I worked for covers 85% medical after you retire and my POA covers the other 15%... Once eligible for retirement, you multiply your years of service by 3 and that is the percentage of your pay you receive for the rest of your life... I worked 28 years and retired one week after I turned 50... 28 X 3 = 84%... Had too many close calls in my career to stay on and essentially work for 16% more pay rather than just retire... Loving every minute of retirement and don't miss one bit of the crap that I was subjected to on a daily basis... Hang in there, your final years will go fast... Be safe.
We can retire at age 52 or after 30 years and draw a check (vested at 10 years in the old system). I went on the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP) Mar 07. Can leave anytime between now and Mar 2014, but have to leave in 2014. Since they are putting my retirement check in a interest bearing fund each month, I'm gonna try to stick it out until the end and get all the money I can!!! (may need a new Ultra by then!!)
Today I completed my 20th year of law enforcement. I am officially able to retire as of right now!
I would get out while the getting is good. You guys have to put up with way to much crap from Joe Public and with the pay and perks, I wouldn't have that job. Hat's off to all of you LEO's.
