It's really not an issue, here in the North just some are **** about how they store their rides.Learned a long time ago make sure the mechanicals are put away correctly, spring cleanup is always a part of getting them ready to go,so why fuss with trying to keep them squeaky clean all winter.

Have you considered a dehumidifier?

^ Agreed. People tend to fuss too much about their bikes in storage.

i just lay a drop light with a 100 watt bulb on the floor right under the pipes. drives the moisture away all winter.

I ride year round so I don't have to winterize. Even when I lived in Maryland the only time I didn't ride was when there was salt on the road.

The original ops "golden rod", not the one you are all talking about works well in a closed environment. There, it warms the air, therefor increasing the ability of that air inside the safe to hold more water vapor, keeping the inside of the safe free of water vapor which has a tendency to condense on metal or thermally conductive surfaces.

Under a bike, even under a tarp there is too much air exchange and the temperature difference between the area near the heater and away from the heater can actually cause more condensation that allowing the bike to breath normally.

I recommend that using a golden rod, a light bulb, a thermal regulating heating strip is not recommended for open unheated garage motorcycles. Even if the bike is covered. In an unheated garage, every temperature change outside moves air in and out of your garage, During high humidity times, moisture will condense on colder, ie metal items. If you garage is sealed well enough, the temperature change is slow enough that the air and the metal remain close to the same temperature, therefore little or no condensation. You get condensation when you have different temperature between your bikes metal temperature and the air. If the air is warmer, it will find a cooler surface on which to release its water vapor. This is on the other side of the bike from the golden rod.
Again, it works in a safe because it is closed and mostly sealed and air exchange is very slow so that your firearm metal parts are the same temperature as the air.

So I say no to using your golden rod for your bike, but think those who use theirs with their wives or girlfriends probably are not worried about a little extra moisture in the air.
