I have a pair of the HD jeans that are lined with Kevlar in the knees, thighs and rear end. I am sure that they do not provide as much protection as leather but they are a lot better than just jeans and they are as cool as any other pair of jeans in the summer.

Sad part is, a pair of Wranglers or even Dickies Work Pants will protect you as well or better than any of the specific "riding jeans".
Kevlar is good against bullet penetration when used in layers, but really isnt worth a damn when it comes to cuts. Its not really substantially stronger than Aramid or even regular Nylon/polyester thread when used as stitching.
If you're not wearing leather, stick with a good pair of heavyweight denim or cotton duck/canvas pants. Wranglers are probably your best bang-for-the-buck as they are quite heavy (14.5oz) and available at your local WalMart for under $20 a pair.
I have the Cortech Deckers leather over-pants pants which I wear over jeans, but they do get warm in the heat of the day. Great in Spring and Fall though here in New England. I also have Joe Rocket synthetic over-pants and 3/4 length jacket which are cooler and far lighter to wear if I am doing any off bike sightseeing and will be walking around for awhile. I was thinking of chaps as well but the no-butt protection thing has me questioning if they would serve my purpose.
I have a set of leather pants (not overpants). Even in hot weather they are pretty good when moving but when one stops or are in slow moving traffic they are hotter than you know what. I hate to think what leather overpants would be like in high temps. Since i do like the protection I tend to wear synthetic overpants with the appropriate armour but i have put two way zippers in them so that i can open up the upper section and get some air flowing.
I got leather bib overalls for xmas from my wife. I like them. For now I am wearing them over my levis. In the summer i will try just wearing shorts under them. Still might be too hot. They have zippers up the legs so they are easy to get in and out of. Has anyone checked out the clothes at Duluth Trading Company? They sell some pretty heavy duty pants and jackets. http://www.duluthtrading.com/
lock55; you and I are screwed in the summer; nothing we wear here in Vegas isn't "too hot". If I see a guy with leather overalls up a Mt. Charleston this summer I'll know it you!
