I was wondering the same thing a year to sell the bike!! The vin will get you 2 keys made 15 buxs for 2 I think..We get bikes all the time with no keys..its no big deal!
Am I the only one wondering how he managed to sell someone a motorcycle that he couldnt start?
Not meaning to be a butt head but if the ignition was not locked why could he not start it? As far as OP's question the dealer needs to deal with the 'missing' key issue. That is of course if you did indeed leave him one. Even if you did I do not think I would have given up my spare until it was a done deal.
Without thinking I asked the same question about moving the bike without the key. Don't need it.
Yes the bike has taken almost a year to sell. I traded it last April for a SERG. Their business has been as slow as anybody's I guess. I can't believe they held it in stock so long without making a deal on it. The salesman said he didn't remember me leaving him the key. Good memory, I can't remember what I had for breakfast most days. I am not assing up for new keys but kinda feel sorry for the guy because he is a nice guy and is also the sales manager so this is making him look bad since he finally has the bike sold and now can't find the keys. It is more than about the $10 for the new keys. I imagine his *** will be on the hook if management finds out.
I bought a set awhile back, $22.00. When I get a new or different bike, I pull the black cover off one of the keys, and write the number down in the owners manual.

I worked both in vehicle sales and service....lost keys is nothing new and should not bring guilt trips when it happens. You mention he is a "nice guy" but calls you a year later and accuses you of not leaving him a key? That's not a nice guy, that's an @$$hole.
Maybe the 'new' owner wants to see if you kept a key.
Some people are kinda **** about someone else having a key to their scoot!
Was told once by a partsman that H-D only uses about 50 different key cuts.
