Harley-Davidson Extended Service Plan
Now there are some non Harley Motorcycle shops that sell extended warranties. Those warranties may or may not be be handled by your preferred wrench as they are are not authorized service providors. So if you get a extended warranty through a metric bike dealership that you bought a used Harley at, that warranty may not be honored by a Harley dealership and you may have to get reimbursed for the repair.
Best bet for peace of mind if you buy a Harley and you want the ESP go get it from the Dealer in the state you live in. MOCO has told the dealers a couple years ago that they are not supposed to sell out of state ESP plan anymore, and MOCO tell the dealers what the MSRP is for those plans but they can be discounted within your state.
If you get your bike from an individual, or another bike seller you can still get your ESP, you don't have to buy the bike from a dealer. Take your bike in for an HD inspection to have it certified, about $150.00. Fix whatever needs to be fixed then get the ESP, if anything needs to be fixed.
I believe the only limits on buying the ESP is the bike cannot be more than 5 years old and have less than 30,000 or 50,000 I can't remember miles on it. The ESP is sold in 2, 3, 4, 5 year plan and with and without tire and wheel. If you get an ESP, I would recommend the tire and wheel, cheap additional cost if you hit a pothole and destroy a rim or tire not yet ready to be replaced.
There are other posts here, and depending on your situation it is usually recommend that if you ride on trips, or more than 15k a year the ESP is probably a good buy. Either way you decide get a service manual. You can get them used on Ebay, or new from a dealer, or get an electronic version much cheaper and print what you need or the whole 700+ pages.
Factory Ford ESP, never had a problem. It is why I got the HD one.
the HD extended service plan covers more than an extended warranty.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
This bike has had the Compensator replaced THREE TIMES now. Otherwise this bike has been fantastic. The motor and transmission are all original and it's running like a champ. But that ESP has easily paid for itself with the BS compensator problems this model year is known for. Supposedly this last Comp is the "latest and greatest" and final word. We shall see.
I got the extended warranty with 5 years on top of the factory (7 yrs total) and am glad I did. Other things it's covered are the wheel bearings and the starter.
I swear by the extended warranty and I would go with H-D. Yes it might be a little more expensive, but I'd hate to be at the whim of a 3rd Party warranty. You get what you pay for in life and sometimes trying to be cheap and save a couple hundred bucks ends up costing you a lot more than that in the end. I've had excellent service from H-D with any problems I've had and am very happy with H-D and the wty which I got when I bought the bike new in Dec 2008. When there's a problem I take it in and they don't even blink - it's taken care of.
