I understand your concern about your bike. Slop is not a good thing. Thats a technical term like clunk. I don't feel that on my '09.

The clunk is just funny. Go find the thread.

The sound appears to comes from somewhere in the area of the tranny. This only happens on downshift and only on the higher gears. What gives??????

With the bike off and in first gear (without clutching) I rock it back and forward and I do get about 1 inch or so of free play before it stops moving. Is this normal???

THANKS!!
I have an 09 as well, and I have the same problem, but a little different. When I'm down shifting, and using the motor as an engine brake, like say going around a 90 deg turn at 25 mph, down shift to second, engine brake, and then throttle up, there is a definite lag upon throttle up, with a following clunk when it all catches up. It's just a second or so, but it is really aggravating. I took it to the dealer on the 5000 mile, and told them of my situation, but they said that all was adjusted properly. Well, I've been riding Harley 4 speeds, 5 speeds, and now my 1st 6, and something is not right. I've found a good local mechanic that's gonna tune her for me this spring, and I'll see what he comes up with and keep you posted. Please let me know if you hear any news regarding yours. I'm really hoping that the mechanic was just too lazy to open up the primary, and its as simple as my adjuster.

Dawg, get down on you knees and open up the primary. Check the chain. My '05 Heritage acted a little noisy in there too, and measuring my chain adjuster ...adjustment...it was too much, according to the bible. I have less than 5000 on it.
I'm not familiar with the hydraulic adjusters, but I'm sure the book would call for a certain cold measurement like the manual ones.

It sounds normal to me, Harley tranny's clunk anyway. It's under warranty, ride her till she blows!

That's genius advice. Let a problem develop, keep your hands clean, trust the dealer to fix things, and gain no knowledge of the machinery between you and the moving asphalt.
And then RIDE the machine that the dealer "fixed".
You'll fit right in.
