I just replaced my tire tubes. With the valve stem nut installed, there is only a very small amount of the stem protruding. Because it is such a short stem now, I can't air up or check the pressure of my tires with any air nozzle or tire gauge (some are shallow enough to work). Has anyone ever run into this before? Is there perhaps a smaller nut I can use?
There's either a second nut on the stem on the inside of the rim, which is holding the stem in too far, or something is bound up (like a twisted tube, not good at all) inside the rim. I think you'll need to bust down the tire(s) and take a look. Either way, I wouldn't ride it until I did (guess you can't, if you can't put air in it.)
I change a lot of tires, but my H-Ds have tubeless tires, so I have limited experience with H-D tires that have tubes. Did one at Christmas time and can't remember if they supply the tubes with two nuts on the stems. If so, then I think you want the inner nut run down all the way on the stem before you mount the tire/tube. If there's an inner nut, I think its purpose is to keep the outer nut from pulling the stem out of the tube when you snug it down on the outside. You wouldn't want the inner nut to be, say, a quarter inch out from the tube because it would cause the sort of problems you're having, and also because it would position the stem in a bad position with respect to an inflated tube, causing stress around the stem.
