What does a tubeless tire valve stem locking nut actually do? I have aluminum wheels with metal valve stems. I had a slow leak on my rear tire and a buddy looked at my valve stem locking nut and said it was loose and that was the problem.
I agreed with it being a little loose ( you could move it slightly) but I didn't think the locking nut actually had anything to do with an airtight seal.
I actually think my problem is a cracked valve stem.
Can anyone shed some light on what the locking nut actually does?
It is a PITA to try to tighten the thing. There isn't enough clearance for any socket or wrench I have. What do people use?
Are you talking about the valve stem nut or lock nut? The valve stem nut holds the the valve stem tight against the wheel, and seals air in by squishing the rubber washer between the valve stem flange and wheel. A lock nut is a 2nd nut, jambed up against the valve stem nut, to keep the valve stem nut from working loose. If the valve stem nut is loose, you can loose air pressure. An old ignition wrench will get in there.
