The above mentioned methods will work. There is a tie down out there made for such applications. It's called a "Canyon Dancer". It was designed for sport bikes, and fits over then end of each hand grip, with loops off the end of each side. You will have to look at an ATV or sport bike shop to get one. They work great on the fairing equipped bikes as well.

Another good spot for tie straps are the points where the front fender attaches to the forks. Use soft ties of course. It's very stable and does not compress the forks.
This is the best choice as it allows the bike to ride on it's own full suspension.... Get some factory tie downs from your local dealer, they usually have a box of them somewhere and will give you a couple for the asking. I use two on each side and one on the rear wheel..
Handlebars will not handle the stress. They will bend if you crank em down hard enough.
