Recently noticed a somewhat minor "knocking" sound in my engine. couple days back i ran my flh up to 90 mph and bike started decelerating without letting off on the throttle.
Stage I breather kit and Samson slip-ons installed day one. last fall replaced samsons w/ V&H slip-ons and have not "remapped". bike was 4 yrs. old last Nov. and has 30K miles. Synthetic oil changed at 2.5K interval after 1K "break-in".
Someone please tell me there is a simple explanation for this performance (or lack there of) issue and that my bike doesn't need "open heart surgery"!!
You didn't mention where r.p.m.'s were at when you hit 90 and bike started deccelerating, it sounds like you may have hit the rev. limiters, but that would not explain the knocking you are hearing now. More info needed. Jim.
tks jim for responding. didn't notice the rmp reading... i do know that the bike has previously reached 105 and still climbing when i checked "the top end" before. the "knocking" is really more like a "ticking" sound. i dropped "Betty" (named her after my mother) at the dealership where we bought her yesterday. had hoped to be able to avoid that (potentially expensive) endeavour but... got a trip planned in may and want to be comfortable that she's road worthy before hadin' out.
you're actually gettin' 100hp outta 95 c.i.? WOW!
again, thanks for taking the time to reply. i'll perhaps know more next week and will post dx/rx here when i know more.
update: Dealership service dept. says dx = "cam bearing failure" requested he give me a price on installing 95 c.i. big bore to compare with the $750 estimate to repair/replace cam bearing. over half of estimate is labor. how much more should i expect the parts to be? i would anticipate that labor shouldn't increase significantly...
