Under you faring would be the best. I have mine Velcroed to the lid on my left saddlebag and that works fine. I used a bag like that mesh thing for a week and wasn't happy, the transponder needs to be orientated properly to be read, there is a front with the Velcro on it that needs to be facing the reader.
I also register my license plates with EZ-Pass so if it's not read they can track the photo of the plate back and I won't get a ticket in the mail.

if it will work if I put it in the trunk on the lid ?
Works just fine. I velcroed mine in. I had it in the upper area of the truck in my Goldwing since the day EZPass became available and the only problem I had was when the transponder went bad due to a faulty batch being put in the field.

Keep your vehicle and registration up to date on their website and even if it fails to read, the fact that they have your plate on file will avoid any notice being generated.

Be aware of the transponder orientation when you install it. Hos it is oriented can affect it being read by the system.

Mine wouldn't work in my leather jackets pocket, so I did the suction cup holder type, till it popped off on the thruway. Now I have one of the black plate mount type, ty wrapped to the crash bar.it's weather proof and is hardly noticeable next to the black lower.,,

Taking the fairing off is a breeze. There are 7 screws, 3 across the top to secure the windshield and 2 each on the left and right sides of the inner fairing. I used the velcro tape that is supplied with the EZ Pass for the windshield application and it works great.

Here is a pic of where one of two inner fairing screws are located. This is the right side just inside the right fork. The other would be in the same location on the left side.

socks on the passing lamps
towel on the front fender.
do not over tighten the screws when putting them back in... they WILL strip.
when taking them out... leave the center windshield in a little until ready to take shield off... it will keep shield from falling into fairing and getting scratched.

hell... if it wasn't 45 mph winds and downpour... i'd take a little trip and do it for ya.
