I haven't read all 7 pages of the topic but how about an address so people can maybe drop him a card? Just a little something to say "Hang in there"?
If he doesn't want to give out a home address(and I can understand that), setup some dummy yahoo email account so people can send him messages while he's recovering. Once he's done, it can be closed.
