Most belt failures occur when the belt has some damage to begin with, it's a good idea to check it every time you change the rear tire. Many people have gotten 100K plus miles on undamaged belts.
My bike just came back from the dealer with a new belt. Doing work on the bike over winter I checked a stone hole that had been there for around 5k miles. It had worked its way to the edge of the belt, otherwise I could have been in the same boat as you. Best of luck getting it fixed soon.
I recall the days of our $50 chains and complaining about the price. No WAY am I letting this belt go unattended or unchecked. Stuff like that rock I guess no one would expect though. I guess it's a good idea to roll the belt and examine all of it.
Well i came home from work and got the axle for the swing arm out. I am missing some tools though. My 1/2"to3/4" adapter ,1 3/16" socket, 36mm socket all missing. Hummm who the hell did I loan them to. I hate when the CRS kicks in so bad. Guess I will have to go buy them again.
I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I had a ton of miles on that belt, about 50K or so, put on a new one that lasted exactly 3 1/2 months. About 3500-4000 miles as I recall. Took it back to my dealer, and asked if it was covered, guess what? NO WAY! Belts are warranted for 90 days. No amount of discussing it made any difference. Ask me if I was pissed. My good buddy is the Parts Mgr, and he was just as upset as I was. Those puppies are NOT cheap. And they are pain to install. Hope you have better luck with your new one than I did. Third one must be the charm, as I haven't had a problem since.
I think a lot of the dealer wrenches take the short cut of trying to slide the belt in between the swing arm and the frame instead of taking the swing arm off. I am thinking of going with the side car belt if i can find one. I am taking my time and doing a little everyday after work. I had to drop my exhaust as i have a 2 into 1 and it was right in the way of getting the swing arm off. Still need to go tool shopping. My budget is shot to begin with after paying the tow bill. Wife is still out of work so money is tight.
I tried a sidecar belt also & it didn't last any longer, they are very stiff, not so sure that they take high speed riding well.
Oh yeah. Thanks for the heads up on that. The belt that just broke was real stiff. It might have been replaced. I don't know for sure i bought the bike used. Anyone have a belt recommendation? Stock?
