I see in the new parts catalog supplement that you can now buy a code reader for 150.00 . I'm thinking this might be worth having as you might be able to replace sensors that go bad and turn your dtc code light off yourself. Not sure does any HD service guys have input on this new tool? my dealer has never charged me to read codes. I have had a few instances where the code was caused by primary spark issues. On those occasions the technician actually did a quick check and found the plug wire came loose.
I was getting a security fob programmed and I asked if they could check the codes while programming the fob. My "Stealer" (Palatine, IL Harley) charged me $46.00 to check the codes... all for nothing. They told me that nothing was wrong and as long as I was running a Power Commander (PCV) the engine light would come on before starting.
