Up there often in July. Great all over. Porcupine mountains, lake in the clouds, east, west - And yeah, northern Wisconsin -- Northern Highland State Forest (Boulder Junction / Eagle River-ish area) has some amazing forest roads...
Lots of U.P. / northern Wisco albums on my PHOTO PAGE...
Rode the UP last year in the middle of July weather was pretty much crappy the whole trip but it was still an awesome ride. For those that have never been to the UP of Michigan you will see the reason that the old timers always called it "Gods country". As for riding the Mighty Mac you HAVE TO ride the grate it is an awesome experiance to say the least. Take a look down it makes you think your flying. As far as the comment about a car being blown off the bridge that was a depressed woman that committed sucide the bridge authority will shut it down to all traffic if it is too windy. I have been across many many times all times of the year in many different vehicles and yes the wind can be uh how can I put it?? intimidating at the least. So getting back to OP the weather is pretty much a crap shoot we have a saying here in Michigan if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes and it will change. Have a nice ride need any thing else just ask this is a great state to ride in. Oh also I agree totally WATCH OUT FOR THE DEER AT ALL TIMES OF DAY!!!!! They are like rats in this state there are so many of them.
picture rocks is also GREAT , one thing for sure I found out if you are riding the back roads up there and you see a gas station FILL UP you might not see another one for a while , even at 3/4 I stop after realy sweating it a few times , [ and wife naging ] yes on the helmet law
Last June, took off into Canada just North of Detroit. Up to Sudbury (Canada), and followed the North side of Lake Superior all the way to Thunder Bay. Down to Prairie Du Chien along side the Mississippi River. Over to the great HD museum and up to the Door Peninsula. From there, straight up to Copper Harbor UP with stops at various sights, i.e. Lake in the Clouds, etc.... Last day was Copper Harbor to Rochester Hills MI. And the grate on the bridge sucks a$$
Copper Harbor was by far one of the coolest stops on the trip. Riding the North edge of Lake Superior and all through the UP were by and large the best parts of the that 3600 mile trip. Temperatures in June were FANTASTIC. We caught a cold, wet day from Sudbury to Marathon but it was still a b...e...a....utiful ride!
we try and go every year, we stay in paradise mi, it seems to be a good place to get to all the cool spots plus there is a little restaurant in front of the holiday inn that is awesome. we generally go the 2nd week of july.
if you are like me and my brother in law and take your wives then trailer your bikes, now here is why i say this. the very first time we went it rained off and on 3 out of the 5 days of our stay, due to lake effect. up there it can rain one minute and sun shine the next all day long. and nothing worse then being stuck in a hotel with an upset wife. at least if you trailer you can take the truck and go to the casino or something. if it was just us guys we would ride the bikes in the rain but our wife's lol no way. staying in paradise lets you have a little distance to ride to all the scenic sites also and they have whitefish light house museum right up the road its a cool spot. its where the edmund fitz gerald was sank.
Yes there is a helmet law in Michigan and don't forget your rain gear. The warmer months in Da UP are also the rainy season. I like early Sept the tourist (FIPs) have mostly left and the weather can be beautiful. White fish sausage and a pastie are a must. There is a ferry, The SS Badger , that runs from Manitowoc WI to Luddington MI aprox $ 60 for the bike and another $60 for you... ENJOY......
The roads in the UP are in great shape. There's a little mom and pop motel by the Porcupine Mts. that's call The Rainbow Inn. Very nice people and they feed the bear right behind the restruant. Pretty nuts. There's a little cyclone fence between you and the black bears Wow!
