My fairing-mounted gauge matches my IR thermometer within a few degrees. I agree with Soos that the need for an exact temperature should be less a priority than seeing relative relationships. I know what my oil temp should be related to the gauge reading, and can react accordingly when it goes outside my comfort zone. I will say that it is my most-used gauge, next to tach and speedo, and I wouldn't want to be without it.
Congrats on the purchase of one of a few that work but seems like way too much trouble for what you get. I did say accuracy was debatable didn't i? I have a fuel gauge too and don't need it and according to many it is almost useless but i guess having "relative relations" to my odometer was the point of install at the factory. My opinion is biased because i don't worry about stuff like that. I ride to enjoy myself not to worry about oil temps. If it blows up i will simply "react accordingly" and get it fixed. I have yet to hear of anyone who saved an engine by having a gauge but i am sure you have. I guess when everyone starts blowing up because they don't have one then i might just get in line until then i will just stare at the air temp gauge like the guy checking his oil temp gauge at 60MPH.
