Default Road King head light

Hi there
I was looking for older posts, but I am new to this forum and I could not find something useful in time without getting stuck in some other cool posts...
So, I think my head light on my Fatboy is a Road King light (I guess you guys will be able to tell me quickly if that is true or not). And my questions is, is there a possiblity to change the light bulb myself without going to a Harley Dealer? The next one is 2 hours away from me. Thanks for any help. Carla

Hope this pic is helpful...

Looks like this one, with the Frenched trim ring installed...

http://www.jpcycles.com/search/produ...=0&results=100

Although it is similar to the Road King, it doesn't look to have the nacelle spear on top, covering the split where the two halves meet. Not the stock RK Nacelle spear anyway.

Stock RK Nacelle Spear:

As far as changing the bulb, remove the screw at bottom of the trim ring and remove trim ring. Then you should see three screws holding the ring in place. Remove those 3. Don't confuse these with the 2 adjustment screws! Look closely the first go, and you should be able to see 2 screws (one top and one side), which are used for adjusting the alignment of the head light. Don't remove those, just the outer headlight ring screws. Anyway, once you remove that ring the head light will almost fall out, so be ready to catch it! Look at the back of the headlight to see if there is a smaller H4 type bulb. This can be removed by squeezing together, then raising the wire clip holding it in place. Make sure to unplug the wire harness first. Reassemble in reverse order. ( I hope my editing hasn't confused you! Sorry, but I had given the directions for removing the entire assembly at first. You don't need to do that, just the headlight!)

If, by chance, the headlight is a sealed beam, just unplug it and change it then reassemble...

Kinda looks like a Adjure brand Tri bar headlight. If it is it's just a standard H4 headlight lamp. Look for a trim ring screw at the bottom of the light, remove that then look for screws to remove around the perimeter of the headlight bucket. Pull them out & the lamp is just plug & play. If it's a H4 look at using a PIAA or Sylvania Silver Star, much better light.

Easy to change..and go to almost any auto parts store and you can usually get 2 for the price of one and a brighter bulb than what you would pay at the Harley Palace..

Does not sound to difficult. Thanks so much for all the answers, I will try to fix it myself... Sometimes it would be nice to have a man in the house, but I can do this !

One other bit of info. Don't touch the new bulb with bare hands. The oils on your hands will shorten the life of the new bulb. This goes for all gas filled bulbs. With regular incandescent bulbs it doesn't matter.

Good advice on the bulb changing all around. On a side note...owning a Harley seperates you from the pack of wannabes. Changing a bulb is part of the journey. I commend you!

It not difficult at all. When removing the retaining ring pay attention to which screws you start with. The one at the very top (and there should be one at the side too) are the adjusting screws and not the retaining ring screws so don't move these and the light should go right back to where it was.
