Default The singing gearbox

To be honest, i don't have this issue since i don't own a Harley (yet) Nevertheless my upcomming Harley has the Six Speed gearbox the article i've read in a Dutch magazine was talking about. I think this gearbox is pritty standerd theses days on more models of the HD, but for sure on my upcomming FLHTK 2010.

So what's this about? The article discribes a problem like a "singing gearbox" while driving in 5th gear due to the fact that a pair of gear's responsible for the 5th gear are differently shaped then all other gears. (this is becasue of the speed meter as they say)

Sollution is to use different lubrication oil and surprise: this is Screaming Eagle SYN3 together with Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabelizer.

Again, since i do not ride yet i really can't tell if this article is some advertisement in disguise. But on the other hand, if it's a true problem and a true sollution maybe this is handy to know. Maybe you are willing to say something about this?

In the meen time, drive safe all!

regards,

Broosha

If you are buying a 2010, they changed the gears again because of all the whine-asses that complained about the 5th gear whine. They actually cheapened it and made it less stronger IMO, but that's just me. The damn whine isn't a problem. I don't hear it much. I can tell when it's in 5th gear but that's about it.

Ther have been HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of miles put on stright cut gears with ZERO problems. If you get a bike with a singin 5th gear put Redline Heavy Shock proof in it and forget all the hype and BS youve read about!

Gotta agree with Dawg. With your 2010, you shouldn't hear any gear noise at all. I heard 5th gear for about 1000 miles on my '07 and haven't heard it since. I've even made special attempts to hear it when riding on a divided highway with a concrete barrier to my left to reflect the noise and still nothing. I do run gear lube in the transmission instead of the "one oil for all holes." Almost 20k miles and no problems at all.

Never heard it on mine. I do run Redline shockproof not for that but because I like it.

I like the 5th gear whine. I wouldn't mind if my 2010 had it. Think of it as a 5th gear indicator, albeit an audible one as opposed to the 6th gear light on the speedo. It would be cool if Harley just added a gear indicator like my BMW's had. Not that I need it, but it can be convenient.

Having had three bikes with the 5th gear whine I'm glad to be finally rid of it.
My 2010 is quiet. I hear pipes. I hear little birdies. I hear 60's music.

All is fine with the world...
