It's a straight swap; plug and play. The only issue is if you buy a brand new HK HU. In that case, the HU must be calibrated by the dealer (basically it's a computer flash that tells the headunit it's in the U.S).
If you buy a used US unit, no calibration is needed 'cause it's already been done.

HD began using the HK's in '06 model year. A minor difference is how the Automatic Volume Control works. The '06 and newer bikes get the vehicle speed to the HU by serial data wire; on the '05 and older bikes, the vehicle speed is provided by the Vehicle Speed Sensor. If you want the AVC to work on an HK HU installed in an '04 or '05, you need to splice the serial data wire found at the speedo (or the one at the tach). Instead of the vehicle speed being provided by the VSS, the splice from the speedo to the white/green wire in slot 9 of the Base Audio Connector (the 23-wire connector plugged into the back of the HU) provides the speed info.

If you don't do the serial data wire splice, the HU functions fine, but without the AVC. The serial data wire/VSS splice is explained in this thread concerning installation of the CB, etc.:

Thanks Carl, I've got a 2000 Ultra, the radio still works, but cassette is dead, not that that makes much difference. I'm trying to decide how to upgrade without spending to much $$$. I'm already converting to a RG this spring so I don't have a lot left over. I'm thinking about the J&M 7.25's for the RG but not sure if the older radio has enough power without an amp. I've read some of your earlier posts with your aftermarket set-up, but can't remember what you were using for speakers or if you had an amp, guess I'll have to go back & find them again, thanks, by the way nice bike.

 

If you still got a warranty I'd get it fixed. If it was out of warranty I'd go aftermarket in a heartbeat.

 

Fortunately for my wallet, I'm not an audiophile. I had a Biketronics interface module for handlebar controls of a basic Sony headunit with Sony Xplod speakers. Very low budget and it worked fine for me. I only did the HK change to have a clean CB installation.

Your current head unit is from Radio Sound. Give them a call; they can tell you what the output is of their product: (502) 267-6768. Lots of guys are happy with aftermarket speakers without amps.

I just bought a '02 EG Standard. It had a Kenwood automotive unit already. I have the exact same problems! As soon as i get a little extra $$ its gonna get a marine dvd player with 3" screen on the faceplate.

Marine, or Off-Road cd players should skip less, and of course be more water resistant.
Then comes amp & speaker upgrades!....

 

Excuse me, but what are pre-outs for an amp?

Just got my HK head unit back from Iron Cross Audio today... WOW! They did an excellent job. Fixed all the known areas for water intrusion. The main board and display were replaced due to major water intrusion. Also, had the RCA pre-amp outs and rear aux jack installed. Total cost shipped back to my front door $340.00 with a 6 month warranty. Not Bad

 

Just finished mine up Replaced everything. Alpine 9883 IPod HU, ARC 125.2 Mini amp, HERTZ 165 HCX 6.5" Speakers and 6.5" adapters, Hogtunes Tweeter pod and the Hawgwired retro kit.

For a 2 speaker system and 2 tweeters this blows most 4 and 6 speaker set ups out of the water. Firecap501 and I put this little mother together and all I can say is HOLY %$#@!

At 80+ aftermarket pipes in a pack of 10 or more bikes its like sitting in your living room listening to your home BOSE system. My non bagger brothers love it because now 4 bikes back they finally have music too. In fact I get music requests all the time now.

FIRECAP501 enjoyed working with you on this project and I know a few brothers saving pennies now for their conversion. Hand controls all work great and HU in place looks like it was made for HD.

Also for the weather/water proofing I went with the biketronics RG cover and just happened to have single sided sticky 1/2" rubber tape and put about 5 laps around the face piece and it seals it up perfectly (no water worries here).
