Question Transporting Bike

Hello all.

Thanks for all your previous advice. I need your help once again. As you can tell from my screen name I am in the military. This requires me to move periodically, which is the cause of my problem. When we move we last time we used a U-Haul or similar truck to move our house hold goods. The last time I moved I did not have my HD. I had a metric. I just positioned it up against my tool box (Covered of course) and strapped it down the best I could. This resulted in a few scratches. My HD Ultra Classic weighs double that of my old bike and I do not feel comfortable just having it on its Kick stand with no really good way to strap it down. I am not able to mount anything in the floor of the rented moving truck. I thought about renting the motorcycle trailer they carry, however they cannot be taken to a different state they are for local moves only. So I need your Ideas as to how to move it safely. Once again thanks for all your advice.

If you're unable to ride it, is there any chance you could rent a pickup and take it in the back? If not, I know there are companies who will ship bikes.

Are you sure UHaul will not let you take those trailers out of state? That makes no sense. They have a regular trailer that you could put the bike in and strap it down and tow that behind the UHaul truck. Safest way would be to pay a company to do it but not the cheapest.

We move ourselves and try to keep the cost to a minimum so we drive the expiation and pull the travel trailer and us a U-haul type large truck to move household goods and tow the Truck. Truck is short bed and Rear wheel would be on tail gate not sure if that is very safe.

I have already asked them about taking the motorcycle trailer out of state and they quote some rule and talk about liability and Insurance issues.

Go to your Harley dealer and get one of the shipping platforms or some might call it a skid . that they ship new bikes on and put the bike on it at the dealers and have them load it in the truck with their fork lift My daughter is moving her bike from California to Florida in a U Hall truck. Just a thought .

I don't know how far your moving, but look into a professional motorcycle shipper.... probably less than you think.

Get a wheel chock and mount it to a board so it will fit tight in a U-Haul trailer...then load the bike and tie it down...should take care of it.

The idea of getting a skid from your dealer sounds good also...

Excellent idea. I've also seen people use a sheet of 3/4" plywood to help distribute the load in a pickup truck. That way you're not abusing the tailgate too much.
