Ok,My road king is the first harley I have ever owned and I have not changed the oil in it yet so right now I guees you could say I'm talking about something I know little about. However I can read, in the Harley book that I have it has "screaming eagle" full synthetic 20w50 oil and it says it makes changing and topping off fluids a simple one product process. It can be used for the engine, trans and primary. The book also list (dino) a "formula+" transmission and primary chaincase lubricant.

Mobile 1 15W-50 from Walmart for $22 per 5 quarts - in the motor. H-D premium oil filter.

AMSOIL 85W-140 in tranny.

10W-40 dino oil in the primary (cheap and don't need high-tech oil here)

Harley dealers use the same grade 20w50 oils in all three components when they do a service on a bike. Amsoil label states that the 20w50 is approved for use in the engine, tranny and primary.

I wouldn't want my tranny and primary to have to work harder to function. That is what thicker oils will do. They may provide more "protection", but being that there isn't any combustion or as much heat, why go to a thicker oil? All you have is moving parts in both the tranny and primary and the 20w50 Synthetic grade is more than enough protection for all three holes.

Drew here from Dr V-TWIN. I actually do you use Mobil 20W 50. I use it in the engine and the primary and use Redline shockproof in the tranny. I find a thicker oil in the tranny makes for smoother shifting. On oil, it is a to each their own kind of thing. When I added mobil 1 the first time my temps dropped at least 10 degrees and the engine got quieter. But that being said, AMSoil is great stuff too. I really am all for using the redline shockproof in the tranny and have been running this setup in my bike for 50k miles.

Engine only. Shock proof in Trans. Another Redline product on primary. IMO I don't think 20-50 is heavy enough for the Trans Just my .02
