This is a tragic reminder to always be aware of what's going on around you. ALWAYS watch your mirrors and have an escape route at every stop light.
After being hit from the rear on a bike in 1990 I am paranoid about watching my rear. In that incident a teenager plowed into me at 45mph while I was at a stoplight. I saw her coming and tried to get on the shoulder, but she popped me anyway, throwing me into the ditch. Being aimed to the right trying to escape helped, as there was a chain of about five cars involved in total.
I now watch every time I come to a stop, have an escape plan in place, and never stop directly behind the vehicle in front of me. I also installed some brighter LED brake lights that blink for a few seconds when braking. Knowing most accidents are frontal, I also installed a modulator for my headlight.
Yep; anything to help you get seen. As I said earliler I have been ran into at a red light. The person who run into me saw me at the last second though.
I feel for all of the people and families that were effected by this, even including the driver who has to live with himself.
He will have to re-live this every day constantly for the rest of his life, as will his family of which this will probably cause him to go mad, become an alcoholic or drug addict or possibly take his own life.
+1.... I agree, It will be hard to live with that on His mind.
I've been looking for a good website with LED lights. When I search its the same 3 lights that show up on every site. Anyone have a site with some variety?
Wow. This is terrible no matter how you cut it and very scary to think about. These poor people never probably saw it coming. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them. Hopefully, the survivors will pull through.
I agree with the strategie of not stopping directly behind the vehicle in front of you. Also I never shift into neutral waiting for the light to change. I'm in first gear just in case. All this may not have avoided this accident, but I still believe it's a good defensive riding technique to use.
If possible stop in such a way that you can pull forward in a straight line that takes you past the vehicle in front - this means NOT stopping parallel to the centerline and leaving more room in front that you may be used to. It takes some real getting used to.
As far as the truck driver's concerned I have little sympathy and hope he does 10 years behind bars. If you're going to drive something as potentially deadly as a large truck then you'd better be paying attention.
In order for the brake lights to work properly the other driver has to be looking out the windshield....This schmuck was just another idiot doing everything except driving.
I don't think there was anything they could've done. The Walgreens employee said the truck driver told her " I was shuffling paperwork". WTF, he couldn't have come to a stop well behing them and then sorted through papers...which is still dangerous as his foot could easily relax off the brake and roll forward.
