Default Dunlop front tire Cupping / Scalloping

Earlier this month during my 10,000 mile service, my dealer found the front tire that came on the 2009/10 touring bikes (supplied by Dunlop) was cupping / scalloping. Dunlop will NOT warranty the tire after a certain wear point (mine exceeded it and the dealer estimated that mileage/wear point to be around 2-3,000 miles). The groove pattern on this tire is in a V shape with the bottom of the V pointed down as the tire rotated forward.

My dealer said that Dunlop has stopped production on this tire and replaced it with another that has a groove pattern pointed in the opposite direction.

The good news was that HD made the decision to cover 50% of the replacement cost.

If you haven't already had it replaced, I would talk to them again or call HD customer service. I had the same problem with the 09 EGC I just sold. I took it to a Dealer in my area that happens to be good. The service guy looked at it and changed it under warranty. I had almost 12K miles on it.
He said all Dealers were changing out all 407F tires for 408F because of defects. I've heard different stories as to why, but my Dealer was telling everybody with 09 touring bikes with the 407's to bring them in for free replacement's.

I had the same problem. Dealer changed it out at 12,000 miles at no charge.

I will tell you what my service guy told me Happened. He said it was Harley's Engineer's that wanted Dunlop to turn the tread facing forward on the 407's for 09 touring. He said Dunlop didn't want to because it would be a problem running that direction. After HD had the problem's with so many tires, They more or less left it up to the Dealer's to handle it. Some Dealer's stepped up and took care of it. Some didn't! It shouldn't cost you anything to have it replaced. You should get them to check the back tire as well. They replaced mine the same time they did the front...0 cost to me!!
