the only pro i can think of is that goofy nut that's welded on the end for ease of removal. they're made in china, thanks anyway=con. if you get a new oil filter at harley and take it to auto zone or advance auto parts, you can find a cup wrench that will fit the flats perfectly on the end of the stock harley filter. do not get the plastic one, they're another hong kong p.o.s. the metal ones take a 3/8" drive extension and on your 09 you will have no issues clearing your crankshaft position sensor like with some of the earlier models. sure is a great investment of $3.99, that's what they cost at autozone. the stock filters are good filters, the k&n, hmm. not impressed.
I've used the chrome K&N's, HD chrome, and black Wix filters over the years.
Zero issues with any of them.
Currently have a few chrome K&N's on hand, I can get them cheap through my local sport bike shop (roughly 65% of HD cost)
The nut on the end comes in handy.
I would gladly use any of the 3.
Great for oil flow, but no good for filtering. See above post for the micron size. K&N is a racing filter made to stop only the big chunks. Wix is a great filter and Mobil 1 is one of the best, but expensive. Have not researched the Harley filter, don't know who makes it for them.
I've used several including the HD and K&N. Even with the stock HD filter and the filter cap wrench (you have to modify to make work) it's still difficult to remove the stock HD oil filter. I have the HD Premium Oil Filter so the K&N with the nut makes the job much easier. BTW the local HD dealer here sells K&N filters.
07 and newer harley went to a 5 micron filter they clain its because of more internal passages so if u use a 10 micron filter im guessin warrenty will be a problem.
I will stick with the stock filter myself. I like the K&N air filters but not the oil filters. Larger micron filtration. Got the cap for the filter at auto parts store. removal is easy.
