Default Electraglide stereo help!

New to the bagger scene. I picked up an 01 Electraglide classic the other day. The stock stereo sucks and I've exhausted the search feature trying to figure out what I should do. I would like to keep stock head unit w/ipod(for now, already thought about sony/biketronics), possibly an elf amp. Was thinking 6.5 speakers, maybe 5.25s. Do any 5.25s bolt up to stock locations? And I would like to be on a budget if possible.

Well I guess the first thing to consider is whether you should keep your head unit. I'm sorry but I don't know if the 01 came with a CD player or cassette? If a cassette I would surely change it for one with a CD player-- not a later OEM either-- something from the aftermarket.

If you keep your head unit you can always go with amp and better speakers from Hogtunes, J&M, or others.

J&M have 7.25" speakers that bolt in with an adapter that are well liked here; Hogtunes are similar in size to OEMs but (to me) better sound than OEM. Price between systems may be important to you.

Do a search and you will find lots of options.

I have a 01 EGC with the stock (cassette) HK unit and plug the Ipod in the aux port in front. I recently installed the J&M 7.25 with NO amp and it sounds great. Kit comes with everything you need.
Good Luck

I don't know how handy you are but, I bought a ARC amp, two Infinity Kappa 6.5" speakers and the mounting rings from Throttleup industries all off Ebay for about $300 and the system sounds amazing!

I've got the hogtunes front speakers and amp set-up. ran just the speakers for a long time, definate improvement over stock, I'd save my money on the amp though as I can't really tell any difference at all with it or without it.

I think that is what I want to do. My 01 does have the cassette but I can plug my ipod in the front. I'm on a tight budget because I just bought bike and want so much for it lol! Ive priced everything. Marine Sony cd deck about $150. Biketronics right under $200. Sony speakers (5.25 or 6.25) about $50. Speaker adapters $50. Elf amp $200. So about $650. And that wont happen for a couple of months lol. Or use factory and for about $300 or less, have amp and speakers....

Is there a noticable difference in the 5.25 and 6.25 while cruising 70 in the wind? I'm starting with speakers. Then next month, probably the amp. And then the head unit possibly.

You need to get speakers that are compatible with the amp, I think the arc amp is most efficient with 2olm speakers & you need 8olm speakers for your radio, so I think you need to do both at the same time or you might do some damage. I have the same problem as mine is a 2000, I'd like to try just speakers, but if I go with 8olm & then later want to add an amp I think I'm screwed, I haven't got a good answer yet as most have the newer HK radio, still looking for better answers.

i had the same problem as you when i bought my '99 flhtci. i didn't mind the casette deck in my factory head unit as i too would be using my ipod. i bought the hogtunes amp, replacement speakers for the fairing, and the tweeterpod. you CAN NOT just put the speakers in without the amp. i'm no stereo expert but was told by hogtunes that their speakers are a different ohm i believe than the stock head unit and although they would work and sound bada** for a bit, they would cause damage. however, with the amp, you are able to hook everything up using the stock deck. a definite improvement and yes, i can hear it loud and clear at 80mph with my short windshield and a half helmet. good luck man!!
