another thing, i could not stand the ipod cable sticking straight out of the front of my deck. so, i took the radio out, took it apart, and ran an auxiliary port out of the back and the little wire now comes out right at the hole where the clutch cable comes through the inner fairing; right where my ipod clips on the left mirror. much, much better. it should be noted that i know nothing about stereos, but found some good info with detailed pictures on how to do this mod. it worked like a charm.

I have the same problem as mine is a 2000, I'd like to try just speakers, but if I go with 8olm & then later want to add an amp I think I'm screwed, I haven't got a good answer yet as most have the newer HK radio, still looking for better answers.
I have an 05 with the Radio Sound head unit. I ran the 2ohm J&M's with the Elf mini amp, factory head unit. Sounds great IMO.

Love my ALpine with IPOD, HERTZ 165HCX 6.5", ARC 125.2 Mini amp, Hogtunes Tweeter pods and Hawgwired conversion kit.

System ROCKS!

I have an 08 with the stock HK and aux port. It came with Hogtunes speakers and I upgraded to the 7.25 J&M and it is LIGHTYEARS difference WITHOUT an amp. I didnt want to draw too much power from the electrical system and I'm very happy. Maybe next year if I have nothing else left to mod or upgrade I'll do an amp. But let me tell you at 80-90mph the sound is still amazing and PLENTY LOUD. I got them from DR Vtwin. Hit the Sticky post on them you cant go wrong. And since your budget wise its a perfect first step that will last you as long as you want while your doing other mods.
