Default shifter centering tension spring

My 09 has a lot of slop in the shifter lever between up shift and downshift, not the toe lever but the shaft that goes into the side of the tranny. This spring keeps the lever in between these 2 points of operation. It seems as if it's been sprung. I looked at the diagram of this assembly in the service manual and it's clear to see the spring. My dealer said I needed a 10k service even though it only has 8k. Is this a common problem on these 6 speed touring bikes? Anybody else had this trouble? Thanks.
