Default How to use a tach when riding...

This is only my fourth season of riding and my Road King Classic is my first bike I have owned with a tach. What applications do I use it for? How do you read it for shifting gears? Thanks.

I usually shift 3000-3200. I usually cruise around 2800, not dropping below 2500 without shifting down. Having said that, I usually go by sound instead of numbers.

I don't look at it much, ride by feel. Occasionally after reading a thread on here I'll catch myself checking it.
I usually cruise at about 2500 RPM, up shift around 3500-4000.

On my old 98 wideglide I took the tach off to keep from looking at it so much and went by sound. The new 96's are supposed to be ran around 2500 and up to prevent engine lugging. they say it's bad for it. I don't know about the older carbed 88. Mine just loped along, almost barely staying running at idle. Say it with me; balop, balop, balop, balop. You know what I mean. Man I miss that bike.

I will look at the tach sometimes to see what gear im in. If the speedo needle and the tach needles are parallel im in third gear. if at 60 miles per hour and turning 2500 rpm in in fifth gear. if the speedo needle is higher than the tach im below third gear. so fourth and so on.... I guess all of my pilot training makes me look at stupid **** like this.

I used to bitch cause none of my Harleys had OEM tachs....Then I started modding them for mo power and learned to shift by the seat of my pants....I'm at the point I don't even need to look at the speedo to see my road speed cause I know the sound and feel so well. Boring, huh?

When I was green, the first thang I notice as the King would wiggle the windshield when lugging....Once I got into performance mods, it was strictly how hard my *** was pressed against the up-cup on my C&C solo seat relative to wrist position.

On my modded Sporties, it's time to up shift when I can let got my left hand to flick the clutch without loosing my grip.

Drive her hard and learn to feel the powerband. When power starts to level off, shift up....from there learn to listen and start up shifting just before that point.

I could tell the speed of my roadstar by the sound too - I'm sure in time I will come to know this bike the same way.

I have noticed times when the power leveled off so I upshifted - I'll try and get the feel for it and shift just before.

Thanks for the advice.

I only use mine if I am trying to pinpoint some anomoly in the powerband other than that I ignore it.
