Angry Pannier lids coming loose....

May seem an odd queery but the roads are so bad over here in the UK at the moment it seems as hard as I try I cant fail to hit a pot hole once in a while but more frustrating is that after hitting one my pannier lids seem to unclip and bounce around loose. Clearly a simple answer would be to lock them I guess but I wondered if anyone else had experienced this?? Cheers

my saddlebag lids are always coming open. Usually its my right side only, unless I hit a big dip. I got in the habbit of always reaching back after a jolt. I have not found a way to tighten up the latch yet.... YET.

Yes, the answer is to just lock them. A pain..but yeah.

Just this weekend I was riding in a group and the two bikes in front of me hit this HUGE pot hole and both bikes saddlebags lids came flying open...and I mean all the way open!
I couldn't believe it. I'd never seen that before! Four lids all the way open...looked like two air planes trying to take off!

The only time I have had a problem is when I haven't hooked them on properly (or suspected that was the case)

I now make sure I engage the hooks at the back fully and carefully before snapping the locking mechanism shut. Never had a problem since. I would also check if the hook reeceptacle on the bike (as opposed to the lid) hasn't bent slightly.

Not sure if this helps but worth giving it a bash and eliminating this option

Yeah thanks I had also wondered if I might be able to remove them end bend em a bit to get an improved "engage" when I push the catch down, I might give it a try.
Cheers

I was thinking it may have been the seals on the lid were getting compressed and not putting enough tension on the tops. I didnt realize there was anything to bend in there. i will check it out when I get home.

There are two little curved clips that snap around the hinge at the bottom of the saddlebag latch, if you slightly bend them up it will tighten up the friction fit on the latches. I learned this by fixing a severely bent hinge on a set of e-bay bags...

i've gotten into the habit of locking my bags. it prevents the bags from flipping open all of the sudden. it's worked for me.

+1 Bend the metal tabs outward (towards you). Fixed my lids popping open issue. I also make sure that the lid tabs are engaged before I latch the lid every time I shut it.
