Default Charging Problem

So last weekend my street had the engine light and battery light come on. I stopped be my mechanics and he checked it out and said the statur was good and the regulator was bad. I picked up a new one at the stealer and put it on and the same lights are on and the gage still says it's putting out under 12, . Any ideas?? Does it sound like the new regulator is bad, does this happen often, and if so how do I get the dealer to replace the defective part? They are about 65 miles away and I dont want to take the bike down there.

Having 2 bad regulators is rare. First make sure your battery is 100%. If voltage is now it will not charge correctly. Make sure the ground for your regulator is good. After that you will need to check all your connections making sure a pin has not come out of a connector. If all that fails you will need to start with checking the stator and going from there.

How did your mechanic check it?? the stator can still be putting voltage out and still be bad.. If I remember correctly.. at 2000 rpm..the stator should be putting out 38-42 VAC --- anything less, and its bad.

and yes... you may ask me how I know this....lol

I had this happen and it was the magnets in the rotor that had broke loose from the rotor. Still stuck to the inside but had broke loose and slid into a group instead of being evenly spaced.
