I've had the SG for two weeks now. 550 miles on it. This is what I've found since then:
The antenna can be cut in half with no apparent loss in reception. Got tired of getting hit in the face with it.
The radio is cool but worthless with the 4" windshield. I got an 8" shield, much better now. Still waiting on the hogtunes to get here....
The 5th gear, the gear I find myself in most of the time, is noisy as hell!!! I mean like somethings wrong. I've heard others saying the same so who knows what will come of that.
The engine is pulling pretty dang good, and not real hot although its 100 degrees out there. Pulls much harder than the 88 I had. And it's much smoother with little or no valve noise at all. Impressive.
The stock exhaust is getting louder. It's growing on me, sounds pretty good. Might not change it at all.
So if you're in the market for an 07 SG this is what I've found at the measely 500 mile mark I'm at...
NICE BIKE... I Love the SG, it is a fun ride. I have not noticed the fifth gear noise at all but have noticed if I shift up to fifth and drop the RPM's below 2k it bogs the engine too much causing noise and intense shaking. Kind of like trying to start out from a stop in third gear. Other than that I really like how smooth the new six speed is. I wonder if my trans is designed different than a standard FL because I have read several posts about the noisy fifth gear and have not noticed it. Hmmm, somthing to look into on the CVO bikes.
Thanks for the update. Try using BelRay hypoid in the transmission when you do your 1000K service. I've been using it since '93 in my Harleys......quiets and smooths.
I was talking to the GF's brother today. He mentioned hearing problems with tranny noise AND a bearing failure in an engine. Something about sealed bearings....
What I find funny is my wifes bike has a cruise drive tranny as well and I don't hear a chirp out of it. Wonder what makes the 5th gear whine like that....
I'll talk to the dealer if it doesn't quite down in a thousand miles.
If they tell me it's "normal" I'll try some different fluid and see what that does...
My 07 Ultra has the 5th gear noise and I don't pull any gear below 2000 because I don't like the way the motor sounds. Also if I wear my 3/4 helmet with the head set. I don't hear the tranny much. It is just too hot for it right now. http://bobbyhill.home.att.net
1st and 5th gears in the 07 6-speed are straight cut, while the rest are helical. Because of this those two gears are noisier, but stronger. The noise in 5th is probably more noticeable because of cruising in that gear while typically one just accelerates through 1st gear.
I ride my ultra from SC to NM next week, I'll post my impressions when I return.
'07 stock pipes on a lot of bikes = tranny noise more obvious;
Shorty helmets in the summer = tranny noise more obvious;
Decreased valve and top end noise on the 96" = tranny noise more obvious;
Lower RPM on the highway (96" stroker + higher gearing) = tranny noise more obvious;
Running at lower RPM due to break-in = tranny noise more obvious;
Not many bikes have enough miles to switch to synthetic yet = tranny noise more obvious.
And, the trannys are noisier now. Is it really a mechanical problem? Maybe...
Obviously you haven't ridden a bike yet making this sound. Cause I think you'd say "Yeah, that ain't right and its obvious it has nothing to do with my shorty helmet".
