Default Opening to one side

Opening to one side would make it worse i think as you would then be relegated to having the pump only on one side of your bike as opposed to being able to pull up on either side.

Am I missing something? Is this only on 'newer' bikes?
I don't see a problem. I pull up on the left side of the pump, dismount, open the fuel door, remove the tank cap and pump in the fuel... then replace the cap and close the door!! No problems!
I do wish there was a 'flat' surface to set the cap while refueling though.

The 6 gal tanks can be a PITA to fill to the top. Not so with the 5 gal tanks.

As for spilling fuel, I bought one of these http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...3&default=none. Unlike what Harley's web site says, it doesn't completely eliminate fuel spills but it does go a long way toward reducing them. The only time it's a PITA is when you get a fuel pump that's set to pump fuel at 20 gallons/second but that's a problem whether you've got this accessory or not.

FWIW!

I have one of those too; works okay, way better than not using it for sure. It works perfect on my brothers BMW.

The biggest issue I have when filling up is that full isn't really full until you stand up the bike and watch it close while you slowly fill it up to the top.

I really think the Governors Brother in Law designed these things and said "Hey, I've got an idea that'll make us rich! Just sign a law that makes all the METRO areas Gas Stations in Missouri HAVE to install these! We'll charge 1,000.00 a handle and get rich!"

California has the same thing; pain in the rear for sure. On the other hand; other states don't even have a small splash guard which suck too!

Yeah it was alot easier filling up my street bob than my EGC...
I bought that orange gas tank helper to and helps alot of spills if you push down real hard that way when it tops of stays in cone area...

Ive been wanting a center stand for my bike being in the garage...so I think I might get one to put on center stand while filling up also...should be able to get closer to 6 gallons then

Did you install the spring that came with it? I have the Harley smooth button and it pops open quite well without having to pry it up.

That must be the other side of the state. We don't have those in KC.

I never thought about the direction the door opens. The first push button latch I bought didn't have the correct spring to work with the '08 and newer bikes. I found that pushing down on the back of the lid helped to pop the lid open.
