I was aware that any HD key can open it if needed. I looked at the open mechanism inside and when I push the key button, it did not move the catch mechanism. I checked for looseness around the lock area and it's all snug.

I just bought the 2010 Ultra Classic Limited. So far I keep going out to the garage and stair at it, sit on it, stair at it due to the weather been pretty nippy out.
I have the keyed fuel lid on the tank and pushed on the key slot and it just popped open without using the key. Is that normal? I read somewhere on here that depending on how the scooter came with a key or button. Is there both, because you don't need the key to open the one I have even though it has a key lock..Also I can't believe it's plastic!

I replaced my stock lid lock by a "mushroom" button and I like it better. No need for a key there IMO.

+1 for replacing the lock with the pushbutton. The whole fuel-up ritual fells like forever when you are stripping your helmet, eye protection, and being careful not to spill - so digging in to find your key will just add to the time. I don't know about you guys but it always feels like I can pump 18 gallons into my car in half the time it takes me to pump 5 or so into the bike.

the fuel door is diecast and chromed. the fuel cap itself, the screw in part is obviously plastic. perhaps the dealer installed the accessory lock which allows you to lock it with your key, or when unlocked it will still shut and snap down, but you can keep it unlocked if you prefer. i changed out mine for the chrome button, and i've had no issues with anyone trying to swipe gas. if your key will lock the fuel door, and when unlocked will open by pushing on the lock area, then yes, someone has replaced it with the accessory lock system. it's a great way to go. i hate digging into a pocket to get the key out for fueling.
53842-00C is the push button fuel tank console door release ($28). This is the inner lock button that you push so it keeps it looking like a lock and you can still lock it if you want to, say if you are at a hotel or something for the night and don't want anyone tampering with your fuel. I plan on getting this soon for my 08' Ultra.
BTW 53919-04A is the same but smooth button.
