The fullface has almost twice the surface area of a 3/4 and three times the half helmet. W/out a windshield, you are geting clean air. The windshield actually causes turbulence from the front (dependent on speed) and from the side from crosswinds.

A fullface will also attenuate the engine noise like a big echo chamber. Foam earplugs work great.

I can't wear my Shoei X11. Along with what's already been mentioned I think the full face helmet's lower surface catches a lot of air coming from underneath, between the tank and fairing.

Interesting, I was just thinking about this subject. I have an old Shoei RF800 that works great on my '10 SG. In January I replaced it with a Nolan N43 Trilogy although I looked at the RF1000 and liked it too (fit wise). The Nolan isn't bad but to me in comparison to the RF800 it is louder, buffets more and fogs up easier than the Shoei. My chin also rubs on the removable lower (chin) guard which gets annoying. I lost a face shield pivot (which Cima is going to replace for free) while riding the other day and that pissed me off. So I tried riding without any shield making it basically a 3/4 helmet. That really sucked. Very noisy and my eyeballs are vibrating for ten minutes after the ride. I even tried ear plugs this morning but my dang ears started ringing! Getting old sucks.... So if the RF1000 does the same thing I need to come up with another plan otherwise riding is more of a chore than fun. That said I still have the original windscreen and have been reviewing alot of treads about windshield replacement. Maybe an 8" Klock Werks is part of the solution.

I purchased a Scorpion EXO900 to replace my harley Fullface. I have an 8" windshield. The Scorpion is great, especially with the chin guard installed. There is no buffeting at highway speeds and air can not get up underneath your chin area and "lift" the helmet. The noise is minimal but I do notice (with the full face helmet) that the sound of the exhaust is enhanced.

This is what is happening... at least with me. I have an Arai Quantum II and if I put my hand flat under the chin guard at speed I get alot less noise. Ear plugs will help but then you can barely hear the tunes.

8" clearview with recurve and a half-lid works great for me. Right now, I wouldn't change a thing.

I also experienced untolerable head-rattling buffeting when I test-rode an Ultra Limited, as I described in more detail here:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...buffeting.html

It was bad enough to discourage me from purchase, the more so that my passenger had equally unpleasing experience. We both wear integral flip-up helmets (BMW Systemhelm 5 for me, Schuberth C2 for my better half) and need the ability to cruise at 75 mph on motorways.

But I didn’t stop there. Based on my previous experience with other motorcycles I asked my H-D dealer to remove windshield from the demo Limited and took another test ride today. Man, what a f....n’ difference!

There was plenty of clean air coming around my helmet, which I liked, and almost no buffeting as long as I kept the wing deflectors closed. I was able to cruise at 80 mph in total comfort.

Shame I am not taller – when I raised my butt some 4 inches off the seat, my head got to almost silent stream of fresh air.

Bottom line? If you wear modern full face helmet, no shield is much better than stock shield. Problem solved, deposit payed. Now I only have to sell my BMW R 1200 GS and wait for the Flame Blue Pearl FLHT to arrive!

More testing. I am wearing a new ARAI Profile fullface and riding an Ultra with a stock shield. Above 65 mph the turbulent air on top of the helmet rattles my cage. Today, I tried all three KLOCK recurves and not only was I getting the head shaker, but the wind noise was worse than the stock shield. Tomorrow I will try two CLEARVIEWS but I expect the same result. After that I guess I will try the HD 15" shield.

I am riding 8000 miles in the next 8 weeks so if the 15" shield doesn't give some relief I will have to carry my 3/4 cause I don't think I can handle 12 hours of head shakin.
