Quick question. I went riding today with my new Shoei RF1000, usually I ride with my Fulmer V2 3/4 helmet, and it seemed that I was getting a lot more buffeting and wind noise from the fullface than the 3/4. I am running a 8" clearview shield with recurve, a between the forks baffle, vented lowers, and fairing adjustable wings. I am also riding on 12.5" progressive 412's, and a C&C solo seat (just trying to cover my set-up). Basically there is no way I can get more wind protection. Has anyone else had problems with excessive buffeting and wind noise while using a fullface helmet with a fairing? I thought that the fullface would be more aerodynamic and less noisy, not the other way around.
Actually I get more buffeting and wind noise with my full face HJC helmet than my HJC half helmet with a 8"

I tried a 8" clearview on my bike (all stock) and I'm 5'8" tall.
I'm pretty short in the torso , so I could just see over an 8" shield.
The buffeting was actually quite brutal with the full face and pretty bad with the half helmet.
For me , a 6" shield was even better than the 8" , but because of previous neck injuries , I can't ride while being beaten up.
I eventually had to go with a shield that is at least 3" over my eye level to cure it.
The stock 12" kinda did the trick , but my wife likes the 15" shield better.
I had pretty much the same experience between my 06 FLHT and the 09 FLHTCU.
I also had lower fairings on both and tried the fork air baffle , which worked better on the 06 (5 gallon tank) than the 09 with the 6 gallon tank.
Even with the tall shields , the noise from below is worse with the full face than the half , go figure....
That's what I've found so far , and what worked for me.

It seems like the noise is coming from up top on my full face but I could be wrong. At first I thought my vents were open but I double checked them when I stopped for gas. Even tried ducking behind the fairing which helped a bit, but hardly.
Today for example it was pretty windy. Enough that a gust or two move me around the highway. It made for a long and loud ride.
But on a calmer day it isn't as big a problem.
I think its because the HJC 16 is so much bigger and rounder then my 1/2 helmet that it sticks up in to the air stream.
Now when I put the larger shields I have on the bike it goes away. But I hate looking through the shield so the best I can do for now is keep the 8" recurve on and use the 12" on longer trips.
When riding behind a windshield, the wind hits you differently compared to no shield. No shield the wind hits the helmet front on and flows around and over the helmet, often very smoothly. With a shield, the wind tumbles over and around the windshield and hits the helmet from different directions, even some from behind. Can cause more wind noise.
Take a look at a long haired person in a convertible at speed, their hair is blown forward, not back.

That makes sense. Is there any solution to this problem? Why does it do this with a full-face but not my 3/4? It seems like its hitting the top and back of my helmet the worst, yet my 3/4 covers the same amount of area in those places...
My situation is totally opposite. I ride an '09 Road Glide with an 8" Klock Werks.
With my half helmet I get pretty good buffeting. With my full face I have virtually no problem at all.
Hondo hits it right on. The full face LIKES a blast of air, especially along the sides or the front top. And the Klock Werks will do that.
The bat wing with most windshields put a curl of air coming down on top the riders head. You have to play with windshields (since you already are managing the lower air) until the air curl is just at the back of your neck. Take your hand and hold it flat in the wind at speed and see where the blast is at. You should be able to find some above your head, out to the sides, and coming in from the back.
I gave up on my Shoei full face on the SG. It was the bomb on my V-Rod with no windshield. Using a 3/4 HJC now.
This is what I did to improve life on my bike. At the time I was smartening it up and about to buy a replacement shield I noticed the odd shape of the custom BMW, the one with that awful twin headlamp fairing.
Having owned BMWs almost as long as I have owned Harleys I have found they know a thing about aerodynamics, so copied the shape along the top edge. My wife reckons things are better for her on the back and my life is also more comfortable. We both wear flip-up helmets all the time, and earplugs!
