You don't need to pull the heads. The reamer is fluted so just pack grease in the flutes and most of the shaving will come out. Follow up with a shop vac hose into the cylinder to suck out the remaining debris. It's your call.
Recommend you go to one of the Lightning forums and ask those guys. Also, don't use a thread repair kit, stick with Timesert. There is a difference.

Default Update

Well last Sat. I installed Timesert and so far so good. I was very apprehensive about drilling head on the bike, but the hole was to the point that I hand drilled it with tons of grease on it and shavings seemed to back out with drill bit. As I taped I also greased well and alot of metal shavings only one turn at a time and backed out to clean off metal, I sucked out with shop vac, blew it out with small tube and bought some caned air and blew out well.

As scared as I was to do it, it went well and I saved about $500.00 so you will have to be the one to decide if it's for you or not.

Thanks- panhead 137

i used just a regular thread repair kit from the auto store, which uses a helicoil,on an aluminum head car. worked great and drove it another 100,000 miles. we use helicoils at work all the time they are actually very strong. would not hesitate to use them on my bike. make sure you fill the threads of the tap with grease, this will catch all the chips. so you can doit with out head removal. be care full when breaking off tang, not to drop it. i did , disconnected distributor wire and turned motor over one lick, came right out. lucky.

Thumbs up

I have also used time-serts with no problem. I always filled the groves of the tap with grease to catch the cuttings. If I remember right they come with red treadlocker to hold the insert to the head. Just follow thw instructions and you'll be fine!
