Two things: the 3-second touch; if you can't hold the fingers on the tank for 3 secs, it's on the hot side; if it scalds you, it's overheat.
I have a digital laser thermometer I'm going to take along. Not only accurate temps, but you can check bearing temps and tire temps in a flash, which will tell you if one is losing air. Bet your dash gauge/dipstick gauge can't do that!
I never felt good about my bike running 230 to 240
Quite a few riders try to compare oil temp to water temp on their car. Oil is going to run hotter than oil, it's supposed to. 230-240 oil temp isn't hot.
But if you're happy with the lower temp then you should run an oil cooler.
I've got the Jagg 10 row horizontal on my Ultra. You can count on a good 20 degree reduction going down the road and it takes a bit longer for things to warm up when you get stuck in traffic. It'll also cool back down once you're moving again which is something I didn't necessarily see before I put the cooler on. I had the oil temp gauge for about 1.5 months before installing the cooler so I got a pretty good idea of what was "normal." The highest oil temps I saw before the cooler install was just over 260 degrees. The most I've seen since the cooler install is just over 230 degrees, which is what "normal" was before the cooler. I'm glad I've got it!
