Default Oil Cooler advice needed

Hey All:

I installed the Dakota Digital dash, which included an oil temp gauge. On my initial ride, the oil temp runs just over 230 with any hard pull (pass etc), the oil goes just over 240, both of which seem to be too hot for my liking.

The outside temp was 75 ish, nice New England day.

What external oil coolers have any of you used and how effective were they?

Thanks!

I used a Jagg 10 row Vertical on my 08 EGS and thinking about the same for the Ultra you will get about 10 for sure at best 20 degrees cooler .. My Ultra without cooler with console in Temp gauge is reading about 230-240 in heavy stop and go traffic, and around 210 with a good steady flowing speed.. The Dipstick Digital Thermometer reads about 20 degrees less.. More inclined the believe the Console Temp.. Good Fuel Management and Synthetic Oil is a Must for me in Florida Riding ..

I don't personally have an oil cooler on my bike but have heard people say good things about Wimmer oil coolers. Looking at their information they are tested to lower temp by 25-degrees or more and that if you wanted it to run even cooler you could use two coolers simultaneously.

Good luck with your search.

I went with the HD cooler w/thermostat. Works fine and I see 200/210 on the gauge in weather conditions similar to yours. Bike is an 09 Utra Classic.

Install was EZ and tucked in nicely in front/on top of the voltage regulator. I'm a happy camper!

You should be able to get the Premium HD cooler for around $250 if you look around. i got mine at an Ebay store. My bike runs at 185 with a max of 230 on a hot day in traffic. I never felt good about my bike running 230 to 240. I even had mine peg a 300 gauge. Been running the cooler for 2 years with great results. Some will say the Jagg is a better cooler and it probably is. I chose the HD because it came with everything in the package. Cooler, Chrome cover, adapter with thermostat. The install is an hour at most.

Take my advice . . . get one. Don't get caught up in the yes or no controversy. You will hear a ton of it here.

Yep on that. I was looking at the jagg and the HD model but went with the HD for the cleaner look and it works great for me. Very easy install.

The HD oil cooler helped some, but the biggest improvement that I saw was the Rineharts, SE air filter, and PCV from Jamie at FuelMoto. No real numbers just my impression.

I used the HD one, due to it had everything included in with. I run somewhere around 185-230 now as before it was always running around 230-250. The install would have been easy for me if I had the correct tools at the time I tried installing it, so it took longer then it should have otherwise it was quite an easy install.

+1

A good stage one setup and tune will do wonders. I also run the HD oil cooler.

Ignorance is bliss. I had a temp gauge on my first bike and was obsessed with the oil temperature. I looked at it every time I stopped at a light ( analog tank mount ). Now, I have done everything I can to keep it cool, stage 1, oil cooler, synthetic oil, and NO gauge. I no longer have to worry about it being hot, cold, what ever. I'm totally clueless and love it. No longer stress over it. You can't really do anything going to the road to change it so now I just enjoy the ride. My thighs can tell it's hot but it doesn't stop me.
