Default Anyone Hard wired a GPS?

Has anyone hard wired a GPS on a harley touring bike? If so could you please describe how you did it? Also wondering if anyone has seen a link for taping into the fuse box. I have a heated seat from Meancity that I need to tie into the fuse box. Thanks.

I mounted my Garmin Nuvi with a RAM mount on the left side of the handlebars. I had purchased a hardwire cable as well from www.mountguys.com so I didn't have to molest the stock factory cable (which I use in my car). I ran the wire thru the clutch cable grommet in the inner fairing. Easiest place to get power is the back of the cigarette lighter. I went to Radio Shack and bought some squeeze/crimp type butt connectors (Part Number 64-3053). Didn't have to disturb any exsisting wiring, just lay the corresponding correct lead into the connector, stick the new GPS cable in and crimp down. Just make sure you have your polarity correct. I dressed it up in there with small black ty-raps. Really thats about it!

Power (orange w/white tracer) and ground(black) on head light branch. No need to go to the fuse block!

Yep, HD left you a wire under the fairing and put a little rubber bootie on it. It's the wire they use for GPS too.

I spliced into the ACC switch so I can kill the power if I need to. Wired a "power outlet" right inside the fairing and strapped it down with wire ties.

This is what I did. Easy 10 minute install.

When you take the faring off, there is a extra power source next to head light harness where it plugs into the head light. This is for european light system. That is where i connected my zumo 550. GPS will come on when you start the bike and turn off when you shut off the bike. Need two spades to made the connection. Like the others said run the wire thru hole in faring.

What about the difference in voltage when 'hard wiring'?
Isn't most GPS's 5 volt?
I've been thinking of 'hard wiring mine, but haven't figured out how to step down the voltage.
Seems when I lock the forks, I always have to give the plug a nudge to reconnect the circuit.

You can buy the W crimping tool at Harbor Freight or a good auto parts store for less than $20.

Or you can buy the really nice official HD crimper for $400.
