did you point this out Before you left the Dealer??? If not - it will depend on the relationship you have with the Dealer - It they will take care of it - do the hour drive and take care of it...
I picked the bike up at closing and there was not enough light to see the scratch.
Even if I had, they had all left by the time I left on the bike. But this is a good point
and was a concern of mine. I called the dealer the minute they opened the next morning
and they said to bring it by and they'd look at it and take care of it. We'll see.....
I would take it in - if they are a stand up dealer and you have been a customer that they know - they should take care of you - I have heard horror stories - My first HD back in 96 had a very small scratch in the tank when I bought it - I pointed it out and was told by the Dealer "its too small for HD to deal with?" My response was - Please supply me with a letter from HD telling me how Long the scratch needs to be Before they take notice - I got a blank stare and was told "We will order a new tank"... That was the Last business I did with that shop - Had I not pointed it out that moment - I would have been SOL... Good luck friend... If they don't take care of it... the above suggestions should work for you and "lesson learned"
That was my buddies fear also when he had to take the bike to the stealer for warranty work. As were checking it over before we ride away he notices a small chip on the tank from when they pulled the tank off. shows the service manager and with out missing a beat says "well it looks like we owe you a tank, won't be here for 2-3 months" what a **** off. but at least they took the blame.
Buffing out clearcoat is no big deal. I do it all the time on my black car. You jsut ahve to know what you are doing with a buffer.
There is no need to replace a tank just for a small scratch in the clearcoat. As long as it is not through the clearcoat, buffing it is fine. They can even wet sand it then polish it out with a buffer and it will be good as new.
Can you catch your fingernail in the edge? That is a rule of thumb check for how deep it is.
